eBay Alternatives - Other Online Selling Sites and Auctions

By: Skip McGrath

With all the seller dissatisfaction with eBay and their strategy to drive small sellers from the site, I am often asked where else small sellers can sell their items. The obvious answers are Amazon and Craigslist, but there are many other selling sites as well.

So I spent some time researching alternative selling sites and came up with a list of the best sites. I did not cover Amazon and Craigslist as those sites are very well known. Instead I looked for sites that you may not have heard of.

In the table below, I list each site, their selling method, their product focus, fees and the Google Page Rank. The Google Page Rank is an indication of how much traffic the site gets. Anything below 3 is horrible. 3, 4 and 5 are good and 6 or higher is excellent. This is important because if an auction site is not getting traffic then there are not enough buyers to bid on your items. For comparison’s sake, eBay has a Google Page Rank of 8.

None of these sites gets anywhere near the traffic that eBay or Amazon gets. Therefore it could be very difficult to make a living on all or any of them. The best use for these sites is to expand your business beyond eBay by adding additional channels to sell in. Since most of them have either lower or no listing fees, there is no incremental cost –or risk to add these channels.
