eBay to Amazon
Transition from Selling on eBay to Selling on Amazon
By Skip McGrath
I have been selling on eBay since 1999. In
2006 I added Amazon, but it never really worked for me. I had sales, but except
for books –not that many.
I noticed that the same products I sold on eBay would sit on Amazon for weeks
Then in 2010, I upgraded to Amazon’s Fulfillment By Amazon (FBA) program. FBA
is a program whereby you send your goods into Amazon, and they take care of all
the collections, customer service and fulfillment.
It was like someone turned on a switch. Since I started selling on FBA, my
Amazon business now far exceeds my eBay business. Although I am selling
essentially the same products, I sell between eight and ten items on Amazon,
for each one that sells on eBay.
Why Should You Sell on Amazon?
Amazon is the largest and fastest growing shopping site on the internet.
Amazon doesn’t release their exact figures, but conversations I have had with
Amazon employees lead me to believe there are just over 600,000 sellers on
Amazon US. (I have no idea how many are on the various overseas sites but I
suspect it is substantial).
Most of the 600,000 sellers are casual sellers (selling one or two items a
month). I estimate there are 50,000 full-time sellers (about the same as on
eBay). You may be thinking, “How can I compete with 50,000 sellers? Wouldn’t
that make the site too crowded?”
It’s funny, but the number of sellers doesn’t seem to matter. I know large
professional sellers who have been selling on Amazon for over ten years. They
tell me their business increases each year, even as the numbers of sellers grow.
I have had the same experience.
Should I leave eBay?
No – Please don’t do that. We still sell on eBay and on some products eBay
can be more profitable. But, it doesn’t take much effort to add the Amazon sales
channel. More importantly, as I will show you, having your products on Amazon
can actually increase your eBay sales and profits.
Amazon over eBay - Five Big Advantages
#1 More traffic and more sales ~ Amazon now gets more traffic than
eBay. Unlike eBay at 4 or 5%, Amazon sales are growing over 40% per year.
#2 If you use FBA, Amazon does most of the work ~ When you sell an item
on eBay you have to collect payment, post feedback, pack and ship the item and
handle returns yourself.
When you sell on Amazon, they do the work for you. Amazon collects the money
(and takes the credit card risk), they professionally pack and ship the goods,
ship them to the customer, and they handle returns for you.
#3 Use Amazon as your eBay drop shipper ~ When you keep your products in
an Amazon warehouse, they will actually ship products you sell on eBay to your
eBay customers. But here is some big news: Amazon ships for less money than it
would cost you to ship the same thing yourself. This actually makes you more
competitive on eBay.
#4 You make more money ~ I can’t guarantee this will be true for
everyone, but every seller I have known who sells on both eBay and Amazon,
makes more money on Amazon. The simple reason for this is Amazon dramatically
outsells eBay for the same goods.
#5 Seller Support ~ I love Seller Support on Amazon. It is much more
accessible than on eBay. It's very quick and easy to email Amazon –and if you
need immediate support, you can get an Amazon rep on the phone in usually less
than one minute. Best of all, they will spend as much time on the phone as you
Skip – I have heard that selling fees are higher on Amazon. Is that true?
Yes, they are – although it doesn’t seem to matter. You will make more money on
Amazon because you will sell more! A lot of folks don’t believe that but I can
attest that it’s true.
One of the little-known secrets to making money online is to turn your inventory
over as often and as fast as possible. That is what happens when you sell on
Amazon. Your profit margin on each sale may be a little smaller, but your
products sell so much faster that you make more total dollars per week or month.
Skip – I am an Old Dog – Can I really do this?
If you noticed at the top of this page, I said I started in 1999. I was 55 at
the time. It is now 2017, so do the math. If I had to pack and ship twenty to
thirty items a day –I would not still be doing this. But with FBA, when a box of
wholesale products arrive, we open it up –put our labels on it (so Amazon knows
who to pay when it sells), put everything back in the box, seal it up and UPS
takes it off of our front porch.
What could be easier?
OK – It’s not that simple –there is still a lot to learn. However, that is where
I come in. Rather than make a bunch of unbelievable claims – I just teach you
what I do. We have been doing this quite profitably for 20 years. If you just do
it our way, you can’t go wrong.
Skip – I am a Stay-at-Home Mom – Can I really do this?
The short answer is YES! If this were like eBay, where, if you have a good day,
you have to wrap about 20 packages and take them to the post office —that could
be difficult for a stay-at-home mom. But with Amazon you can send all your items
into Amazon and let them do the work. You only have to ship one box at a time,
and UPS will pick that up from your front porch.
I have been training people since 1999 And, over the years, I have taught plenty
of stay-at-home moms to do this. In fact, single or married, this may be the
perfect online business for moms raising kids at home.

selling products with this system that I have to state what the “average” person
made doing this. Well, as you can imagine I have no way of knowing that, so to
comply with the law I have to state here that the average person made less than
one penny with this system.
